On July 14th 1859, the first known visitor remarked that the sparkling calcite formations resembled diamonds, thus the name for the cave was born. A guided tour of Mammoth Onyx Caves is included in the entry ticket price of Kentucky Down Under Adventure Zoo. The Cave was discovered in 1799 and opened for cave adventure public tours in 1922. Onyx Cave was discovered in 1971 as a parking lot was being constructed for Guntown Mountain Amusement Park. The caves opened for tours in May of 1973. Onyx Cave is a wet cave that offers beautiful cave coral, a wall of cave bacon, and a 40 foot column. Cave adventure tours are 30 minutes long and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. In addition to the cave tour, you'll find an awesome variety of rocks, minerals, fossils, and books at the Onyx Cave Rock Shop. Minutes from Mammoth Cave.

This tour is perfect for anyone who does not want to do a lot of walking or stairs and is wheelchair accessible.
